Updated July 29, 2009:

Weather:

Geneva is located at 400 meters (1300 feet) above sea level. During August, the weather is rather pleasant, with temperatures between 10 C (50 F night) and 25 C (77 F). There might be rainy days as well as thunderstorms.

Check weather forecast here.

What kind of clothing is suitable to take with you to Geneva?

As during the day it is quite warm and sunny but in the evening rather fresh and cool, make sure you have some warm clothes, in particular for excursions on the lake or to the mountains.

The congress excursion will take us to Gruyeres, which is at 750 meters (2500 feet). Accompanying persons program includes a tour to Chamonix (1000 meters / 3300 feet) and  if weather permits  a climb with cable-car to the Aiguille du Midi (3800 meters / 12650 feet). Expect temperatures below freezing level up there!

Do take a jacket and an umbrella, in case of rain.

Safety:

Geneva is a safe place. However, common sense precautions should be taken, especially in a handful of problematic areas. Pickpockets are on the prowl at all times of the day. Purse snatching and pickpocketing are common in buses, markets and other public areas.

Ground transportation:

Geneva is a small town and most of its sightseeing is within walking distance.

The airport is located 5 km out of the town/city.

From the Airport to the hotel:

a) Taxis are safe but very expensive. The 10-15 minutes fare is between 30 and 50 CHF.

b) Some hotels in the vicinity of the airport have a shuttle bus. There is no other shuttle going downtown.

c) Public transportation

Tourists staying in a hotel in Geneva travel on all buses and tramways for free!

At the hotel check-in, you'll receive a bus ticket (Geneva Transport Card) valid for the duration of your stay.

At the airport, in the luggage collection area, you'll find, near the exit, a machine giving free tickets for public transport to the town/city. Just press the button and pick up your ticket valid for an 80 minutes ride to any destination.

Check here to see how this machine looks like and for other information about transport.

To reach the bus station, after leaving the luggage collection area, climb one floor up to the check-in level and get out of the building. You'll see the bus stop on your left.

Information and schedules (in French only) on public transportation can be found here.

To go from the Airport directly to the CICG (venue), take Bus 5 (destination Hopital) and come off at "Vermont" stop (11 minutes ride).

Bus 10 goes to the Central train station and to the center.

There are also trains going in 6 minutes from the train station adjacent to the Airport to the Central station. There is a train every 10-15 minutes. Every train stops at Geneva Central station. The free ticket (see above) is also valid between the airport and the city.

Tips:

Prices in hotels, restaurants, taxi fares etc. include taxes and service. A tip, therefore, is not a must, but justified for good service.
